I really appreciate how Free People has evolved into a full on lifestyle brand with the range of accessories and home items they now offer. Amongst the beautiful finds are these crafted bicycle seats from Brooks x Kara Ginther and a daintily applied crochet guard for your spokes. Cycling has never looked so sweet.

Available here.

Good morning and happy Monday! I’d like you all to meet Danica of Chic Runner,  author of the running and lifestyle blog that I’ve been frequenting for the past 3+ years. Danica shares some of her favorite items below, and why did I never think to buy Lululemon product off-price? Enjoy!

ChicRunner

First and foremost: favorite sport, favorite team, and favorite athlete?

Favorite sport for me is such a hard question to answer. I love running personally, but I love watching baseball and college football. I do love watching running, as well, but it’s not on often enough! Favorite team is the Anaheim Angels! Favorite Athlete… well, I don’t really have one. I guess I really like watching Jered Weaver pitch because his passion for the game is amazing. I also like a few college players and anyone on the Angels.

As a runner, how does the sport translate into your personal style, if at all? How would you describe your style?

Running really doesn’t have too much to do with my personal style, unless I’m being lazy and decide to wear running clothes throughout the day, which is rare and mostly only done on the weekends. I love Lululemon pants though. My personal style is really about comfort and being true to myself. I wouldn’t call myself fashionable at all, but I always am comfortable. I would consider my style to be somewhat of a tomboy look.

Running skirts have boomed over the past couple of years, have you given them a try?

I have! I tried running in skirts, and I wasn’t a huge fan, but I do like the idea of adding a sparkle skirt to my attire when I run instead of just wearing a skirt to run in. I love the Team Sparkle Skirts myself, they fit better than the others I’ve tried and are more flattering as well.

Favorite style trend of the moment for running:

I don’t know if this is a thing of the moment, but I’m so obsessed with Lululemon capris and Wunder Unders. I wear them for everything. I’m the girl who wears leggings as pants, and I don’t care.

What are your essential running items?

My favorite running essentials: The skinny strap Zensah bra is my go to workout sports bra. It fits perfectly, keeps everything in place, and is the softest material I’ve ever felt. Another Zensah product I love is their compression socks, they help with recovery and training. I also love my K-Swiss Keahou II shoes, they are perfect for my neutral foot and work well for long and shorter runs. As I mentioned before, Lululemon Wunder Unders are incredible, and so are Nike Tempo shorts in fun colors.

Favorite race outfit you’ve worn:

My favorite race outfit I’ve worn is Nike booty shorts and a bright orange Nike Dri-fit top. I love this outfit because this is the race that I broke four hours in the marathon, which was so incredibly special to me.  Another fun run that I’ve done is the Disney Half, which I was Mike Wazowski, which it was so fun to hear everyone yelling “GO MIKE” at me and it was so much fun to be in ‘character’. I wore a Team Sparkle Skirt and everyone was commenting on my skirt too, which was awesome!

With so many themed races and fun runs popping up, are there any events you’d like to sign up for based on outfit potential? (e.g. Bay to Breakers, Disney Princess Half)

I have found that running in costume is really fun! I used to ‘race’ competitively, so those days are in my past and I’m enjoying running just for fun a lot more now, which means costumes are exciting and make the race more fun! I have thought about running another Disney race just because they are so much fun and so different. I do want to run another marathon in costume too.

You’ve been to many races, both as a competitor and for work; what are some of the worst/impractical outfits you’ve spotted?

See through leggings are the WORST. I don’t know if women don’t realize that they are see through, or if they just don’t care? It is mind boggling to me that people would wear them in public and just not care. Another is the men who don’t take care of the chafing issues and have blood running down their shirts. That always freaks me out.

In addition to running, you also played soccer. Do any other sports influence your taste in workout gear or beyond?

I’m really casual when it comes to workout gear. Most of the time I wear old race shirts or even my husband’s old work shirts to the gym. If I’m going for a run I make sure to wear more ‘high performance’ gear, but most of the time I can find cute stuff from Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Target and Forever 21. No need to pay high prices for what you are going to sweat it out in! I get all my Lululemon from online, it’s all used.

For non-performance gear, what are some of your favorite brands or stores?

I’m probably one of the cheapest people out there, and paying an exhorbant amount of money for clothes is ridiculous to me. My go-to is Forever 21, hands down. I usually find stuff at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. I don’t mind the quality there since I’m not paying a ton of money for it. I love all my clothes across the board from those places.

If you were to compete in the Olympics, what sport would you play based on uniform/outfit alone?

I would play tennis. 🙂

Bonus: How do I get Allyson Felix to follow me on Twitter?*

HAHA hmmmm I have no idea? If you just ask her?

Thank you, Danica! Be sure to visit Chic Runner to see what she’s up to and follow her Twitter!

*I went to high school with Allyson Felix, who follows Danica and has no idea who I am, but will keep trying to get her to follow me.

Weekend happennings//

Apr29

+ I have a lot of hours ahead of me to break in these guys: new bridesmaid shoes for an upcoming wedding.

+ The weather here is warming back up to allow for more beach time.

+ Last night’s Mad Men was so good! Stan’s face throughout this scene was killing me.

Other notes//

+ Let’s not talk about the Lakers.

+ The NFL Draft went down over the weekend. Here’s a rundown. My team [the Rams] seemed to have fared alright.

Have a great week!

IMG_0705 copyI had been needing to update my footwear options lately ever since I noticed that my choices are either warm-weather sandals or something of a heeled variety; there really wasn’t an everyday middle. Enter the Vans Sk8 Hi: an easy, year-round classic that also brings a mid to my wardrobe, a first for me. Initially, I was a little self-conscious of looking like a high-schooler in them, but I think that speaks to Vans’ unique ability to create and maintain a youthful identity over the years, which is kinda what the ‘Neverland’ mentality of skateboarding is all about.

Ladies and gents, I’m stoked to introduce a new segment to complement what I believe SOUTHBOUNDSUAREZ to be all about: celebrating sport and style.

I’d like to introduce you all to Andrea Forist, Jordan Brand Apparel Designer for Nike.  I stumbled upon Andrea’s portfolio a few years ago and was stoked to see that she was responsible for the US Snowboard team’s plaid in the 2010 Olympics, as well as her additional work for Mage and Neff.  So without further ado, meet Andrea:

andreaforist3

First and foremost: favorite sport, favorite team, and favorite athlete:

Snowboarding-because it makes me feel like I’m flying, St. Louis Cardinals-because I went to college in St. Louis and that team truly brings the city together,  and Michael Jordan-the only athlete I ever had on my Valentine’s cards.

How does sport translate into your personal style?

I incorporate a lot of 80s and 90s athletic wear into my every day style. It has been said that I might have one of the best collections of crazy color blocked vintage ski coats…EVER. I like loud colors and patterns, and it’s also important that my clothing is functional and versatile enough for the sports I participate in every day, such as sitting in front of a computer, tap dancing, and practicing parkour as I make the trek from  the last parking spot on the Nike campus to the 4th floor of the Michael Jordan building.

How do current fashion and streetwear trends influence your work designing for basketball?

When designing basketball apparel, I definitely take into consideration current streetwear trends when relevant and look to runways for upcoming trends. Actually, attempting to translate trends that seem the least relevant to basketball can produce the most interesting and unexpected results. My basketball designs are a carefully considered mix of fashion elements, the latest sports technology, and the bold Jordan aesthetic.

First piece you ever designed for an employer:

I got to pick out some back pocket embroidery color for denim at Big Star. Haha. The first ‘real’ thing I designed was some snowboarding bibs for B by Burton.

First time getting press for a design (editorial, athlete, celebrity, etc.):

I don’t know what was the first time was. My designs have been worn by all kinds of pro snowboarders of the years including Shaun White, Scotty Lago, Hannah Teter, Kelly Clark, Halldor Helgason, and more. Probably the most universal/main stream press my design work has received is for the Olympic uniforms for the 2010 US snowboard team…that and Justin Beiber wearing a t-shirt I designed for Neff.

Most exciting career highlight thus far:

Shaking Michael Jordan’s hand.

What is one of the biggest challenges in designing for sport categories?

The biggest challenge is always to make clothing that functions at the highest level possible for that sport and at the same time, make it look cool that people will want to wear it regardless of playing the sport it was designed for. That is a challenge I love to take on.

Being in such a niche, when or how did you arrive at designing for active categories?

I guess my career kind of evolved into this. By the time I graduated from art school I knew I was going to move to LA with the intention to get into snow/skate/surf because I liked the aesthetic and attitude associated with these sports. Ending up in the Jordan brand at Nike was an unexpected evolution, but it makes sense.

If you could re-design any professional team uniform, who’s would it be?

I would really like to re-design the color for the Los Angeles Clippers…haha! I have to design product for Chris Paul that uses his team colors, and that bright red and blue are not my favorite.

Favorite sports trend of the moment:

I am loving short shorts making a comeback for guys a move towards a more fitted and tailored silhouette in most sports. I also like the quirky nerd style NBA players like Russell Westbrook are rocking off the court.

Favorite items or category to design:

I like to have a lot of variety in the type of design work I do, but my favorite items to design are definitely outerwear and snowboarding gloves.

Go-to Nike kicks:

Lately, I’ve added a pair of Jordan VI retros into my regular rotation of patterned Doc Martins. They’re in a kid’s colorway-black with a pink teal gradient! I also rock some black and gold Nike Free 5.0’s when I’m in dance class every week.

If you were to compete in the Olympics, which sport would you play based on uniform alone?

Figure skating, obviously…SEQUINS!!!

Lastly, how was working with Chris Paul?

Great. He is a very down to earth and mellow guy. He likes watches. 🙂

And we should definitely go buy: The CP3 VI Hyperply Tech Hoody. It’s got a lot of great tech features built in for playing basketball outdoors, AND it can work as a casual every day piece as well!

All opinions and view expressed are those of Andrea Forist and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of Nike Inc. or the Jordan Brand.

Thanks, Andrea! Visit her blog here, too.

So what do we think? Check in next Monday for a new interview.

Weekend happenings//

Apr15

+ A surprise birthday celebration with family. Lots of cake, Cars, and candy. Here’s a Vine glimpse of the action.

+ Finally caught Jurassic Park 3D, one of my favorite movies, with my brother. [See here.] The glasses they hand out are kinda fun.

Other notes//

+ THIS. I was SO upset Friday evening. I’ve no words other than “See you in October, Kobe.”

+ Garance recently swung by Free People’s HQ, and the place is as beautiful as I’ve always heard. Take a peek here.

+ Meet Frank Catalfumo, a cobbler who’s still in business at the sturdy age of 90.

+ Congratulation to Adam Scott on his Masters win! I love this image.

+ Due to the weight of my work schedule, I’ve fallen behind in a few places, this site included. I’ve started countless drafts for posts, but most are left unfinished and ultimately deleted because they were time sensitive. I’m looking forward to adjusting and fine tuning my attention to the extra things outside of work, including a new segment for SOUTHBOUNDSUAREZ. Just gotta continue to push myself to prioritize.

+ And finally, but most importantly, please continue to pray for those affected by yesterday’s events in Boston. Utterly heartbreaking.

rodarte-vans-600

The lovely Rodarte ladies have teamed up with Vans to promote the Vans Custom Culture Contest. Kate, Laura, and Vans are encouraging high schoolers to submit designs of their own decorated kicks to earn a cash prize for their own school’s art program as well as have the design produced. Pretty sweet. What’s also pretty sweet are the pair Kate and Laura designed and signed. Sadly for us, those aren’t going to be available. New DIY inspiration?
